NEWS UPDATE
The leader of the main opposition party in Bangladesh was arrested on Sunday morning, said the party.
He was arrested a day after a massive protest against the prime minister ahead of the elections to be held two months later.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) issued a statement saying, "Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been arrested by the authorities of the administration."
Alamgir's daughter Shamaruh Mirza, who is in Australia, told AFP, "The police are holding him."
Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesperson Farooq Hussain said he was not aware of his arrest.
75-year-old BNP Secretary General Alamgir has been leading the party since Khalida Zia, the president of BNP and two-time prime minister, was arrested and sentenced to prison and her son went into exile in the UK. Zia has been under house arrest since his release in 2020 from a 17-year prison sentence.
According to AFP reporters who were at the protest site, the BNP and the largest Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami, said Saturday's protest was the biggest protest so far this year.
Also, it is said that the protest that took place before the general election in January is a new phase.
More than 100,000 supporters of Bangladesh's two main opposition parties participated in the protest, demanding that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resign to allow free and fair elections under a neutral government.
Hasina, the daughter of Bangladesh's founding leader, has been in power for 15 years.
She has rapidly developed the economy in Bangladesh in terms of gross domestic product, but inflation has increased.
His government has been accused of corruption and human rights violations.
Both BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami parties have called for a nationwide strike on Sunday in protest against the violence.
Security was tightened in the capital Dhaka on Sunday, with thousands of police and paramilitary border guards patrolling the streets of Bangladesh.
